Eden and Kolkata:

 
This ground contributed immensely in Indian cricket. This is the biggest ground in terms of its capacity and one of the best in the world cricket. Eden is really paradise in its look and is mentioned by world cricket lovers, cricket commentators, ex-and current cricketers with same reverence like Lords and Melbourne. All cricketers want to perform in this ground to get the standing ovation of Eden crowd.
And this was the home ground of Sourav Ganguly. Prince of Indian cricket was nurtured in his budding years in cricket paradise.
Definitely the ambiance of Eden inculcated his cricket appetite. His journey started from Eden and he played several first division matches in this ground. Hence Sourav was so desperate to get a century and when he realized that long cherished dream against arch rival Pakistan in 2007, quite understandably he was over joyous.
Sourav without Eden is incomplete.
So is Sourav without Kolkata.
Kolkata's cricket loving crowd is always an inspiration for Sourav.
Sports is a religion in Kolkata and only Brazilian football lovers can match with Kolkatans in terms of exuberance for sports. Kolkata always supported true sporting spirit of the game and hence when Mustaq Ali or Kapil dev were denied from test team for wrong reasons, Kolkata roared in protest – ‘No Mustaq, no cricket’ or No Kapil, no cricket’ though none of them were son of the soil. So it’s quite understandable how Kolkata will feel for the son of the soil –Sourav.
Conscious cricket loving crowd of Kolkata whole heartedly supported this great player. They are always there with Sourav in ups and downs of their loving –"Dada”.
Sourav is very lucky to get such a rock solid strong supporters who played, more often than not a pivotal role in his performance as an emotional cushion.
It is truly said that: Kolkata champions Maharaj and Prince of Calcutta champions Indian Cricket.

His young age Coach-Debu Mitra
 
We first want to show our gratitude to the coach in Sourav's young age ---Mr.Debu Mitra.
Had he not identified this diamond of Indian Cricket in his budding stage, we millions of cricket lovers might have missed a glittering gem in Indian cricket crown!
He nurtured Sourav in his budding days and helped Sourav to blossom .Behind today's Indian cricket icon  --Sourav Ganguly, definitely a lot of effort from his young age coach, had been put in those molding years . To climb to Everest, you have to move the first step in base camp. Likewise Mr. Mitra mentored young Sourav in his early days helping him to reach a glorious height in Indian cricket.
He is now coach of Saurastra and brought the side from plate group to elite group in 2007. More importantly, during those nightmarish times in 2005 when he was dropped from Indian side – he went back to his real guru of early age to correct his technique. Debu Mitra made slide correction in Sourav’s batting by showing video to him of  his best innings.

Sambaran Banerjee
 
A very successful Bengal wicket keeper and under his captaincy , Bengal won Ranji trophy in 1989.Though deserving, he did not get India cap since Said Kirmani – the best wicket keeper Indian cricket ever produced , was in his heyday then.
Down but not out! Sambaran came back as selector and he was instrumental in selection of  Sourav Ganguly in 1996 England tour .There was a  lot of hue and cry by labeling Sourav as Sambaran's "quota" player .
 In second test, Sourav by happenstance got selected in first eleven as Sidhu left the team midway after a clash with then captain Azharuddin. Captain sent him as one down in green, early morning wicket of Lords. The rest was history -- as Sourav made a marvelous knock of 131 at Lords! And then in very next test at Nottingham again he made a resplendent 136!
No looking back anymore. Sambaran's "quota" player started his long illustrious golden saga in Indian cricket and Sambaran Banerjee proved all critics wrong.
Had Sambaran that very day not fought for Sourav –seemingly an unknown face, dropped four years ago after single ODI in Australia , we may not have so much scope to write on Sourav!
Sambaran showed his fighting spirit by leading from the front  in the field and so did he as selector off the field. We owe a lot to him for giving true Indian cricket lovers a chance to enjoy Sourav's flamboyant left handed batting and delicate off drive.
